What does "verified contractor" mean?
How contractors get verified on Havnwright, what we check, and what verification does not guarantee.
When Havnwright eventually surfaces contractor profiles, you will see a Verified badge on some of them. Here is what that does and does not mean.
What we verify
When a contractor signs up to Havnwright and applies for verification, we check:
- Identity: a real person with a UK address and contact details.
- Business registration: registered with Companies House (limited co.) or HMRC (sole trader).
- Public liability insurance: current policy, minimum cover, in the contractor's name.
- Trade-specific accreditations where they claim them:
- Gas Safe for gas work
- NICEIC / NAPIT for electrics
- MCS for renewables (solar, heat pumps)
- TrustMark for energy-efficiency
- FENSA / CERTASS for windows
What verification does NOT mean
- It does NOT mean we vouch for the quality of their work. We have not been on their job sites.
- It does NOT mean every job will go well. Even reputable contractors have bad weeks.
- It does NOT replace your own due diligence (references, site visits, recent photos of completed work).
- It does NOT guarantee the right price. Verified contractors are not automatically cheaper or more expensive.
What you should still do, every time
- Get at least three quotes for any job over £5,000.
- Visit a recent finished job if at all possible (contractors should be proud to show one).
- Ask for two customer references and actually phone them.
- Check the contractor's insurance certificate (ask to see the document, not just be told they have it).
- Get a written contract before any work starts. Standard JCT contracts exist for renovations.
Reporting concerns
If a verified contractor behaves unprofessionally, dangerously or dishonestly, email trust@havnwright.com with the contractor's name and details. We investigate every report. Repeat issues result in removal of verification.
